Ruby on a dark studio ground

Ruby

Red judged on depth and on fluorescence.

Hunza · Jegdalek 9 Mohs Oval / cushion

Corundum, chromium red

Ruby is corundum coloured red by chromium — the same element that makes emerald green. That chromium also fluoresces, which is why a fine ruby seems to glow from within in daylight. The Hunza valley produces a clean, slightly pink red; Jegdalek in Afghanistan gives the deeper, more saturated material. We buy for the strength of that glow before we buy for size.

Living with it. As hard as sapphire and just as easy to live with. Only fracture-filled stones need care, and we disclose those in writing.
